Relief for Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda

Your help matters.  And is deeply appreciated.  The massive destruction and death that Typhoon Haiyan, known as Typhoon Yolanda in the Philippines, wrought may take many years to un-do.  Although none of my direct friends nor blood relatives were affected by the Typhoon, I consider the entire country of the Philippines my Motherland and Filipinos everywhere my Kapwa Pinoy, my sisters and my brothers.  So my heart grieves with everyone affected by the Typhoon.  Having lived in the Philippines until the age of eight, I know first-hand the volatility and the beauty of the 7000 islands that make up the “Pearl of the Orient.”  Earthquakes, typhoons, volcanic eruptions are common, but the scale, size and destruction of Typhoon Haiyan are unprecedented.

I’m grateful that we were able to raise $500 last weekend (which turns into $1500 with the 2:1 match at my workplace) at a quickly put together Kirtan (call and response chanting) at Gallery Black Lagoon.  It was an honor to pray, sing and chant with Jason McKenzie on tabla and Rick Henderson, Alice Zimmerman and Buffalo Thunder of San Antonio’s kirtan group – Shantikar.  So much gratitude goes to Singer Mayberry of Gallery Black Lagoon for donating her space for the event.Kirtan with Sumukhi, Jason McKenzie on Tabla, Rick Henderson, Buffalo Thunder, Shantikar

But so much more is needed to help with Relief in the Philippines, so please do not hesitate to continue donating funds to these great organizations, doing phenomenal ground work in the Philippines:

1) CARE – Typhoon Haiyan

2) Philippine Red Cross

3) Catholic Relief Services – Typhoon Haiyan

4) Islamic Relief USA

5) International Rescue Committee – Typhoon Haiyan

There are many more organizations listed here:  http://worldnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/11/13/21386694-how-to-help-organizations-offering-relief-to-typhoon-haiyan-survivors

Every little bit goes a long way.

Thank you for donating as much as you can.

Salamat.  (Thank you in Tagalog, the national language of the Philippines)

Om shantih om,

Sumukhi
